The United States runs on about 120 volts electricity while many other countries run on 220 volts electricity or higher.  Without a converter or transformer you can burn out your appliance since North American appliances are not designed for high electricity output.  

NOTE: This transformer may require a different grounded adaptor plug when used in countries outside Continental Europe. The grounded adaptor plugs and ground collar allow the Schuko-type Continental European two round pin plug to fit additional grounded foreign outlets.  Countries that you will need a ground collar and an adapter include United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia....
