Grounded and Non-Grounded Plugs

Syria is located in the Middle East bordering the Mediterranean Sea.  The Deluxe Syria Adapter Plug Set comes with two adapter plugs, including a grounded and a non grounded adapter plug.  These Syria adaptors allow your US appliances to fit into Syria wall outlets.  When traveling to the Middle East you might also need a converter.

The Standard Syria Adapter Kit comes with a grounded adapter plug.  The Basic Syria Adapter Plug Kit comes with a non grounded adapter plug. If you are not sure whether you will need a grounded or a non grounded adapter plug for your trip to Syria, you can watch Going In Style's Adapter Plug Video featuring grounded and non grounded plugs.

Adapter plugs allow electrical connections up to 240 volts. An adapter plug does NOT change the current or voltage (this requires a converter) unless your appliance is dual voltage. If your hair dryer, curling iron, hair straightener, or electric razor is not dual voltage, you will likely need a voltage converter.

Non-grounded adapters may NOT be used with appliances that have grounded plugs; for these you will need a grounded adapter.

Many of our customers find it handy to have multiple adaptors while traveling - either to run several appliances simultaneously or simply as a backup.

Grounded Adapter Plugs

If you are traveling with a grounded United States dual/multi-voltage appliance or using a grounded Transformer you will need to use a grounded adaptor plug. A grounded United States plug has two flat blades and one round pin.

Non-Grounded Adapter Plugs

Going In Style offers non-grounded adapter plugs for use with your voltage converter, transformer, or dual/multi voltage appliance. A non-grounded United States plug has two flat blades.

Cycles: 50 Hz vs. 60 Hz.

Syria operates on 220 volt electricity and is generated at 50Hz (Cycles) Alternating Current. United States 110-120 volt electricity is generated at 60Hz (Cycles) Alternating Current. This difference in cycles may cause the motor in your 60Hz United States appliance to operate slightly slower when used on 50Hz foreign electricity. Most modern electronic equipment including battery chargers, Lenovo, HP, Asus, Toshiba computers, iPods, etc., will not be affected by the difference in cycle.

Be sure to check each individual appliance to see if it is dual voltage.  You can watch Going In Style's video on how to check to see if your appliance is dual voltage.

Computers and Apple Products

If you are traveling overseas with a Toshiba, HP, Lenovo, Asus, laptop or Apple device such as an iPad, chances are you won’t need a voltage converter. Most laptops are multi-voltage and will operate on voltages ranging from 100 to 240 volts. However, computers do need to make safe connections to foreign power systems and a surge protector is recommended and you will still need an adapter to use your plug.

About Syria

Geography

Syria is located in the Middle East, bordering the Mediterranean Sea, between Lebanon and Turkey. The climate is mostly desert; hot, dry, sunny summers (June to August) and mild, rainy winters (December to February) along coast; cold weather with snow or sleet periodically in Damascus. The terrain is primarily semiarid and desert plateau; narrow coastal plain; mountains in west.

Currency

Currency in Syria is the Syrian pound (SYP). Credit cards are accepted at major establishments; however it may be difficult to use a US credit card. ATMs are available but sometimes it is difficult to find an ATM that both works and accepts US issued cards. Major, chain hotels usually have a working ATM that will accept foreign cards. If you are traveling from the US it is best to bring enough cash and travelers cheques to cover the trip. There are Western Unions in Syria and you can have money sent through Western Union. Foreign currency and travelers cheques can be exchanged at bank and hotels.

Staying Connected

Syria’s fair telephone system is currently undergoing significant improvement and digital upgrades, including fiber-optic technology and expansion of the network to rural areas. The number of fixed-line connections has increased markedly since 2000; mobile-cellular service growing with telephone subscribership exceeding 50 per 100 persons in 2010. When travelling to Syria you will want to take an international or unlocked cell phone and purchase a Syria SIM card. You can also contact your mobile service provider to set up an international calling plan. You will need an adapter to charge your phone. Most cell phone battery rechargers should be multi-voltage, therefore will not require a converter. If the charger says 100-240 volts, 50-60 cycles then your charger in multi-voltage.

Syria has 420 internet hosts and 4.469 million internet users. Internet access is available in internet café, hotels and coffee shops. Internet speed tends to be slow. When traveling with your laptop or iPad you will need an adapter to charge your device.
